It's no secret, I was born at an early age in the spring of 1955. I’ll let you do the math. I grew up in New England in a conservative family that forbid me reading or viewing science fiction or fantasy. The closest I came was the classical literature. It was my senior year in High School when I finally broke free with an assignment to read Stranger in a Strange Land. What an introduction!

In college I fell in love with writing. But life happens. And now, as I get ready to retire, it is time to reinvent myself and I am returning to my passion for writing.

Let me tell you a little story. This is about the memory of a small paper boat. Back in the summer, when I was much younger, seven, maybe, my parent’s property abutted a babbling brook. It was quite deep in places and shallow in others and always fun to splash around in. It was the one place we were forbidden to go.

That summer the neighborhood kids I ran with discovered paper boats. We would design and fold our boats in secret at night and sneak down to the brook to race them the next day. It was always a challenge to see which design would stay afloat the longest.

I remember my worst design was one I’d sown together (I was seven remember. And it sounded like a good idea at the time.) and my best design was one I’d folded using both paper and foil.

I’ve come to realize ideas are like those little paper boats I was folding in bed at night. They were only crudely folded paper until I put them in the water. Then and only then did they become boats.

I have been writing most of my life. It is a big part of who I am. I want to share my knowledge, write about the writing process and encourage others to put thoughts into words. Even if you never publish, writing is a skill that will serve you well in life. At it’s very base, writing is about good communication and expressing ourselves.

My stories are Fantasy and Science Fantasy. Some will question–have I published? And the answer is yes and no. Yes, as in this is not my first blog but no, there are no books out there with my name on them yet. There is an old YouTube series I co-wrote, I have put in book form. And I have expanded the story into a series of five novella. These will be published starting in 2026.

I have completed some ghost writing for friends and provided articles for another website. Now, with retirement approaching, it is time shift my focus.

Join me as I step publicly into writing and put this little paper boat in the water. I wonder if it will float.

Tell me about your paper boats.
